Ground controllers listening to the communications link with the Strato Jump III are startled by the sound of rushing air and a sudden, cut-off call over the radio to abort, Piantanida's oxygen mask having depressurized at about the 57,000-foot mark.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Magnificent Failure: Free Fall From the Edge of Space )〕 Ground controllers immediately jettison the balloon at close to — higher than the cruising altitude for commercial jets — and Piantanida's gondola parachutes to the ground.
